Tonight there’s a chance the number one pick in the 2014 draft is on the line as the Texans take the road to face the Jaguars. The Texans after winning their first two have lost their last ten and record wise are currently the worst team in the league. This isn’t due to a shortage on talent. Quarterback has been an issue this year as Case Keenum has taken over as the starter after Matt Schaub hit a very, very rough patch early this year. Keenum has shown some promise and is willing to take chances downfield. However he hasn’t fully figured out how to read defenses and has had a very tough time against blitzes.
Ben Tate had his most productive game since Arian Foster went down last week and should continue against a Jaguars defense that struggles against the run. Not surprisingly, Andre Johnson has also had a huge year and should be able to produce against a young Jaguars secondary.
Breakup the Jaguars everybody! They are now on a two game win streak and have won three of their last four to now give them a record of 3-9. Chad Henne hasn’t been able to put up numbers at quarterback but it’s tough given the circumstances. With Justin Blackmon suspended for the year, Cecil Shorts is the only reliable option in the receiving corps. The number two option this week should be rookie Ace Sanders. He’s explosive in the open field, but at 5’7 is very well suited for the slot and due to injuries is being forced into the number two role.
Maurice Jones-Drew had his most effective game of the year last time he played for the Texans in what has been a rough year. Jones-Drew has had injuries to the offensive line but in the few opportunities he’s been in the open field, doesn’t seem to have the same burst he did just a few years ago. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Jaguars continue to give some carries to Jordan Todman tonight.
This is a tough one to predict as the Jaguars are hot but struggle at home while the Texans are just too talented to be this bad. In this case, I’m going to say the talent wins out as I just can’t see a team of their caliber losing 14 straight games. My prediction is Texans 24 Jaguars(+3.5) 20.
