Week Nine Extra Points and Falcons/Ravens Prediction

While Philip Rivers is always mentioned as one of the league’s top quarterbacks, it might be time to put him in the Peyton Manning, Tom Brady category. Rivers like Manning is proving that he can win with anyone. Playing without his top weapon Antonio Gates, Rivers connected on two touchdowns with his backup Randy McMichael and two more with Seyi Ajirotutu who was an undrafted rookie that was recently called up from the practice squad. The Chargers may not be in first place now but with the receiving corps only getting stronger, they should have yet another year where they finish off strong.

One of the biggest surprises of the season so far has been the emergence of Peyton Hillis. Coming out of college, Hillis wasn’t known for his running as he blocked for Darren McFadden and Felix Jones at Arkansas. However, it is possible that now he could be mentioned as the cornerstone in one of the most lopsided trades in recent memory. The Broncos traded Hillis and two draft picks for Brady Quinn this past offseason and haven’t looked back. Quinn has yet to take a snap this year as he is the Broncos third quarterback due to the possibility of Tim Tebow coming in as a glorified fullback. Couldn’t the Broncos have just kept Hillis and then used that second first round pick on a need? That question could play a big part in defining the Josh McDaniels era in Denver.

Terrell Owens continues to silence the doubters as at age 36 he is still putting up huge numbers. In his last five games, Owens has 41 catches and seven touchdowns. He is also third in the league in receiving yards. Owens is on pace to reach all of his contract incentives this season and if he keeps playing at a high level combined with his physical conditioning, it wouldn’t be surprising if he played until he was in his forties.

Coming into the draft, many viewed Dez Bryant to be a character risk but midway through his rookie year, it appears that the rest of the Cowboys should follow his lead. Bryant doesn’t give up when the game is out of reach and plays with a lot of heart. Bryant seems to have a connection with Jon Kitna so it is quite possible that he is in for a very big second half.

Thursday Night Prediction:

With this being the first week of Thursday night games, I am going to be making my predictions each week in this article. This week’s matchup is a possible Super Bowl preview between the Ravens and the Falcons. The Falcons are a very strong home team but the Ravens seem to be getting stronger on defense every week. My prediction is Ravens 23 Falcons (-1.5) 20.
